How to upgrade to iPhone 2.0 firmware if you’re on Windows
So you want to install 2.0 firmware on your jailbroken iPhone, but you can’t use PwnageTool, because you’re a Windows user? Here’s how I did it. I’m not sure if it’s the “right way”, but it worked perfectly for me - App store and everything else works.
- Get “pwned” iPhone 2.0 firmware from torrents. Search for something like “iPhone 2.0 Custom Firmware Vanilla (5A347)” on The Pirate Bay.
- This step, as far as I know, is not needed, but I did it to do “clean install” (all your settings and content will be lost!) - restore to clean 1.1.4 firmware (search for it) and jailbreak it (I just used ZiPhone from “much loved” Zibri and chose “Do it all”)
- Open up iTunes, hold down Shift and click “Restore”. Now choose firmware you just downloaded from torrents.
- After couple minutes your first-gen iPhone will be running 2.0 - fully unlocked and jailbroken.
WordPress for iPhone
Today Automattic Inc. released iPhone application for WordPress.
It’s a free download and supports multiple blogs, categories and tags, post password protection, post previews in Safari and multiple photo upload. Both self-hosted blogs and blogs hosted on wordpress.com are supported.
You can find out more by going to iphone.wordpress.com
P.S. This entry was posted using this app.
Syncing iPhone’s calendar with Google Calendar
iPhone Calendar doesn’t support synchronization over-the-air using Apple’s iCal format, which means you can’t sync entries on your phone with, let’s say, Google Calendar.
If you don’t want to pay for MobileMe but still want your calendar synced - NemusSync does this with Google Calendar. You need a jailbroken iPhone, tho.
NemusSync is available under Installer.app’s System category (BigBoss sources). Install it, set up your account details and don’t forget to choose a “Default Calendar” and set “Upload Events” to ON if your want to upload events you add on your device to Google. Basically, that’s all - you’re set. That’s the nice part. What does suck is that you need to remember to sync (launch NemusSync and press [Sync Calendars]).
Apple launches MobileMe (or at least tries to)
Couple minutes ago people started seeing MobileMe login screen at www.me.com. Now it’s been taken offline and redirects to MobileMe’s description page at Apple.com again. Apple is having a busy evening - MacRumors reports that Apple TV v2.1 and App Store on iTunes are beign released too. MobileMe is beign expected to be up and running in coming hours.
Update: MobileMe came back for a second and I managed to grab a screenshot of login screen. Now it’s gone again.
iSlsk - P2P file sharing
Wouldn’t it be great if you could download music to your iPhone, while walking around, using peer-to-peer and for free? Well - you can.
iSlsk is a Soulseek client (I didn’t know about this P2P network, but hey - if it let’s me download music using my iPhone - it must be a good one!). And you know what? It is. App is great - it even creates a Soulseek account for you (if you don’t have one), imports downloaded music into your iTunes library, looks really nice, and, you’ll like this - runs in background (which means that you can browse the Web or reply to e-mails while your music is downloading).
There are some glitches from time to time, but it works and keep in mind that this is an early version. Currently you can not seed (give to others) songs you’ve downloaded or songs from your iTunes library, but this is promised too.

deviantART launches iPhone-optimized version
Few days ago deviantART - a popular online artist community with more that 7 years behind it - launched an iPhone / iPod Touch optimized version of a site. It let’s you to browse artwork (newest, popular, categories), view user profiles, read user comments, add deviations to your favorites (if you’re logged in) and so on. I’m sure that many deviantART members who own an iPhone will appreciate this web app - it runs pretty smooth and interface looks neat.
If you visit www.deviantart.com from your iPhone or iPod Touch you will automatically get this optimized version. And there is a “Disable Mobile Interface” link at the bottom of the Menu for those who want regular version.

Installer.app search function
I was bitching about this since the beginning - some kind of search function in Installer.app was needed badly. There are a lot of packages even within Installer’s default sources list and installing app named, for example, “TestApp” without knowing in which category it resides involved a LOT of scrolling. Alphabetical index on the right side (as in iPod) would be my idea how to solve this.
Few days ago I updated Installer.app and wow - finally this problem is taken care of, and this solution should work even better than alphabetical index - search field at the top. So now instead of scrolling for 2 minutes you just type in “TestApp”.
Thanks, Installer.app team!
TV Forecast and Tomatometer
Here are two great iPhone / iPod Touch web apps for everybody who watches TV shows or goes to movies.
TV Forecast
Don’t want to miss the next episode of your favorite show? Want to know when “My name is Earl” new season airs?
With TV Forecast you can easily build a list of you favorite shows and it will show you when the next episode is airing. You will see episode’s title and a brief overview too.
Visit http://www.bigbucketblog.com/webtv/ on your iPhone.
Tomatometer
If you, before downloading a movie or going to a movie theater, do look at film’s ratings on the Internet, you must know about Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a respected movie review site that let’s you know how fresh (or rotten) the movie is in rate from 0 to 100 (percent of positive reviews). This little web app is a must-have when you’re standing in line for tickets at the movie theater. Punch in movie’s title and it’ll give you the number and 10 latest (I guess) reviews.
Visit http://www.bigbucketblog.com/webtomatometer/ on your iPhone.
These apps come from Big Bucket and, for OS X users, there are Dashboard widgets for both of these too. Tomatometer even made a brief appearance at the latest iPhone event.
Twinkle
Twinkle, as you may suspect, is a Twitter client for the iPhone. Before trying Twinkle I tried a few web-based Twitter apps (Twinkle is a “native” app and is available via Installer) and they all didn’t feel quite right. But Twinkle is done very well - it almost feels like you are using an application made by Apple that was bundled with iPhone. Functionality is also great, it runs pretty fast and hasn’t crashed a single time.
App provides you with a 3 basic views - Home (updates from people you follow), Near Me and Public timeline. When you tap on an update, it let’s you Reply, Send private messages, Follow user and view user’s Profile and Posts. So basically you have all you need.
“Near me” section shows updates from people.. right, near you. It uses iPhones built-in cell tower and WiFi access point triangulation to find other Twinkle users in your area. Location-based Twitter user + iPhone owner social network almost. Location, as far as I know, is only visible to others using Twinkle.
You can also take a photo using iPhone’s camera and attach it to your message, but, currenty, photo too will be visible only to other Twinkle users. Developer has said that photos will be visible to everybody in a near future.
Definitely a recommended app for all you Twitterers out there!
How to install: Twinkle is available via Installer app, under “Network” category (or add http://www.polarbearfarm.com/repo/ to Installer sources list if it’s not there). As with all apps and to get Installer itself, you will need a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch to do this.
